Iberian Peninsula in figures - 2024
Issue year: 2025

Summary

The National Statistical Institutes of Portugal and Spain are jointly publishing the 21st edition of The Iberian Peninsula in Numbers – 2024.

An important set of official statistical indicators, grouped into 14 topics, allows you to compare these two neighbouring countries and see where they stand in the context of the European Union. In many cases, the information is presented in detail at regional level.

These and other topics are discussed in the publication:

Portugal, Spain and the European Union maintain their 2030 target of 32% of final energy consumption coming from renewable sources. In 2022, Portugal exceeded this target by 2.7 pp; Spain and the EU 27 were 9.9 pp and 9.0 pp away from reaching it, respectively.

Between 2013 and 2023, the average age of women at the birth of their first child increased continuously in both countries, with values always higher in Spain. The smallest difference was 0.3 years in 2020, and the largest was 2.0 years in 2023. Last year, Portugal recorded 30.6 years and Spain 32.6 years.

Road freight transport, which is much higher in Spain, has evolved differently over the last decade: between 2013 and 2022, Portugal recorded a 3% drop, i.e. 4.7 million tonnes less, while Spain increased by 41%, corresponding to 463.2 million tonnes more.

In 2023, the risk of poverty or social exclusion was 26.5% in Spain, 20.1% in Portugal and 21.3% in the EU. Romania remained the highest, at 32.8%, and the Czech Republic the lowest, at 12.0%.
