The most recent indicators on tourism are available on the Portal under Products> Database> Theme: Tourism.
The Database, which is constantly updated, provides the most recent data from the various statistical operations on this topic, but also allows access to time series.
After selecting the topic, a table with the respective indicators is displayed, where you can use the arrows to sort the columns according to the desired result. Thus, in the “Reference period” – “Initial” column, you can use the ascending/descending sort tool to view the earliest available data (the start date of the indicators).
It should be noted that the table with the information for the selected indicator displays, by default, the most recent data. Therefore, to view previous years, you should click on the “Change selection conditions” menu option, which allows you to access the dimensions of the selected indicator to change the “Data reference period” dimension and select the desired years from those available.
To obtain information older than that available in the Database and in the Press Release collections on this topic, go to Products>Publications>Theme: Tourism, where the annual publication Tourism Statistics is available, first published in 1970.
Prior to Tourism Statistics, some information on this sector can be found in the multi-thematic publication Statistical Yearbook of Portugal (AEP), from its 1933 edition onwards, which includes a section dedicated to this topic in the “Communications” chapter. This chapter remained until the 1964 edition, when it was replaced by the chapter “Transport, Communications and Tourism”, reflecting the growing importance of this sector, which, from the 1966 edition onwards, came to have its own independent chapter.
