Where can statistical information on protected areas be accessed?

Products with this information are available on the Statistics Portugal portal, highlighting:

 

·         Database> Theme: Environment> Subtheme: Biodiversity, where a set of annual indicators is available, disaggregated at the Municipality level, on the surface of protected areas, and the type of protected area (Natural Park, Regional Nature Park, National Park, Nature Reserve, Local Nature Reserve, Protected Landscape, Regional Protected Landscape, Natural Monument, Private Protected Area, Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species, Protected Area for Resource Management,  Marine areas network).

 

Examples of indicators:

o   The proportion of the area of protected areas (%) by geographical location (NUTS — 2013); Annual.

o   Area of protected areas (ha) by geographical location (NUTS — 2013) and Type of protected area; Annual.

It should be noted that, in the Database, the tables of the selected indicators show, by default, the most recent and aggregated information. However, they can be changed through the option “Change selection conditions” to obtain finer breakdowns in the dimensions of indicators, where applicable, and/or other reporting periods.

·         Annual publication  Environment Statistics — Chapter "Soil, Biodiversity, and Landscape — sub-chapter "Nature Conservation”.

 

It should be noted that the set of publications, with content analysis, is available in PDF, which is complemented with information tables in XLSX and CSV.

In the publication space, the “Previous editions” option allows access to previous titles.

 

Protected area’ means land area, inland water area or marine area in which biodiversity or other natural occurrences are of particular relevance because of their rarity, scientific, ecological, social or scenic value and which require specific conservation and management measures to promote the rational management of natural resources and the enhancement of natural and cultural heritage by regulating artificial interventions liable to degrade them’.

In the context of nature conservation and protection, information on the Natura 2000 network and the Ramsar Convention sites is also available, either in the Nature Conservation sub-chapter of the publication or in the sub-theme Biodiversity of the Database.
