Summary

On World Population Day, Statistics Portugal presents a set of demographic indicators relating to the size and age composition of the resident population in Portugal and the European Union.

In 2024, the resident population in Portugal was estimated at 10,749,635 people. Over the 54 years between 1970 and 2024, the country registered an increase of 2,086,383 people (+24.1%). During this period, the proportion of elderly people more than doubled, while the proportion of young people decreased to around half.

Portugal is one of the Member States with the oldest population in the European Union. In 2023, the country had the second highest proportion of people aged 65 or over (24.1%) and the second highest ageing ratio (188.1).
