Passengers grew in almost all modes of transport and internet continued to increase - 2024

Summary

In 2024, the number of passengers transported increased in all modes of transport, except maritime, compared with 2023. There were increases of 5.0% by road (+11.0% in 2023), 9,2% by train (+16.7% in 2023), 9.0% by metro (+20.7% in 2023), 4.6% by air (+19.4% in 2023) and 6.8% by inland waterways (+21.5% in 2023), while maritime transport recorded a decrease of 1.4% (+15.1% in 2023).

Freight transported by road and rail decreased 8.4% (-8.8% in 2023) and 8.1% (+2.2% in 2023), respectively. In contrast, air and sea transport recorded increases of 14.8% (+0.1% in 2023) and 4.6% (-2.9% in 2023), respectively.

In the Communications sector, the number of internet accesses increased 2.5% (+2.9 in 2023), with optical fibre growing at a faster pace (+6.6%; +7.1% in 2023). There was also an increase in the number of fixed telephone accesses (+0.4%; +1.2% in 2023), active mobile accesses with effective use (+0.6%; -1.2% in 2023) and subscription television subscribers (+1.5%; +2.1% in 2023).

Traffic associated with broadband internet access grew 14.1% (+18.2% in 2023). Fixed telephone voice traffic decreased 6.8% in the number of calls made and 13.4% in the number of minutes. In the mobile network, the number of calls increased 0.7%, although there was a 1.4% reduction in the number of minutes. Postal traffic, in turn, fell 6.4% in 2024 (-4.9% in 2023).
