Resident population increases, but demographic ageing continues to grow - 2024
18 June 2025

Summary

On December 31st, 2024, the resident population in Portugal was estimated at 10,749,635 people, 109,909 more people than in 2023 (10,639,726 people), increasing for the sixth consecutive year.

The population increase resulted from a net migration of 143,641 people (155,701 in 2023), which counterbalanced the negative natural balance of -33,732 (-32,596 in 2023). These results translated into a crude rate of increase, a crude rate of net migration and crude rate of natural increase of 1.03%, 1.34% and - 0.32%, respectively (1.16%, 1.47% and - 0.31%, respectively, in 2023).

In 2024, due to the decline in fertility, the number of children per woman at childbearing age decreased to 1.40 children (1.44 in 2023).

Demographic ageing in Portugal continued to increase. In 2024 the ageing ratio reached the value of 192.4 elderly people for every 100 young people (188.1 in 2023).

The median age of the resident population in Portugal rose from 47.1 years in 2023 to 47.3 years in 2024.
