Foreign markets dependence reached a three-year minimum - 3rd Quarter 2025

Summary

The tourism accommodation sector accounted for 10.5 million guests and 28.6 million overnight stays in the 3rd quarter of 2025, with changes of +2.2% and +2.0%, respectively (+4.3% and +4.2% in the same order, in the 2nd quarter of 2025). Total revenue reached EUR 2.7 billion and revenue from accommodation totalled EUR 2.2 billion, marking growth of 7.4% and 6.9%, respectively (+9.4% and +9.8% in the previous quarter).

Although the external markets were predominant, accounting for 67.8% of the total, this was the lowest share since the 3rd quarter of 2022, totalling 19.4 million guests (+0.3%). Overnight stays by residents increased by 5.5% to 9.2 million.

In terms of regions, Grande Lisboa depended the most on foreign markets for overnight stays (83.2% of the total), followed by RA Madeira (79.5%) and RA Açores (76.6%). Conversely, Alentejo and Centro showed the lowest dependence on foreign markets (30.7% and 36.1%, respectively). 

Algarve remained the most popular destination in the 3rd quarter of 2025 (29.8% of the total), followed by Grande Lisboa (20.6%) and Norte (17.5%). Both resident and non-resident overnight stays occurred mainly in Algarve (27.8% and 30.7% of the total, respectively).
