Travel by residents reversed the downward trajectory and grew - 3rd Quarter 2024

Summary

In the 3rd quarter of 2024, trips taken by residents in Portugal increased by 2.6% (after -13.4% in the 2nd quarter of 2024), totalling 8.2 million. Domestic trips reversed the downward trend from the two previous quarters, increasing by 1.4%, reaching 6.9 million (84.2% of total trips). Trips abroad rose by 9.8%, reaching to 1.3 million (15.8% of the total). 

In the 3rd quarter of 2024, the main reason for travel continued to be ‘leisure, recreation or holidays’, which accounted for around 5.6 million trips made by residents (67.7%, +1.1 p.p. compared to the 3rd quarter of 2023). The second main reason was ‘visit to relatives or friends’, which led to 2.1 million trips (26.1% of the total, +0.4 p.p. compared to the 3rd quarter of 2023).

‘Hotels and similar establishments’ accounted for 25.2% of overnight stays (11.6 million) resulting from tourist trips taken by residents in the 3rd quarter of 2024. This share was surpassed by “free private accommodation,” which remained the main accommodation option (53.6% of overnight stays), by hosting 24.8 million overnight stays during trips taken by residents.

The Internet was used in 30.2% of cases (+1.7 p.p.) when organising trips, with this resource being chosen in 67.3% of trips abroad (+3.4 p.p.) and 23.3% of domestic trips (+0.8 p.p.).
