In April, the unemployment rate decreased to 6.8% and the labour underutilisation rate to 12.1% - April 2023

Summary

March 2023:

• The active population (5,286.3 thousand) remained practically unchanged from February 2023, having increased from December 2022 (1.2%) and from March of the same year (1.7%).

• The employed population (4,917.9 thousand) increased from the three periods under comparison (previous month, three months before and same month of the previous year): 0.1%, 1.0% and 0.6%, respectively.

• The unemployed population (368.5 thousand) decreased by 1.0% from February 2023 and increased by 3.9% from December 2022 and by 20.2% from March of that year.

• The unemployment rate stood at 7.0%, the same value as in the previous month, up 0.2 percentage points (pp) from three months before and up 1.1 pp from a year earlier.

• The inactive population (2,400.4 thousand) remained practically unchanged from February 2023, having decreased from December (1.4%) and March (2.6%) 2022.

• The labour underutilisation rate was estimated at 12.2%, down 0.1 pp both from the previous month and from three months before and up 0.8 pp from one year earlier.

April 2023:

• The active population (5,270.2 thousand) decreased 0.3% from the previous month and 0.1% from January 2023, having increased by 1.6% from April 2022.

• The employed population (4,913.2 thousand) had a negative relative change from the previous month (0.1%) and a positive one from three months before (0.3%) and from a year earlier (0.7%).

• The unemployed population (357.0 thousand) decreased from the previous month (3.1%) and from three months before (5.3%), having increased from a year earlier (15.9%).

• The unemployment rate stood at 6.8%, down from March and January 2023 (0.2 pp and 0.3 pp, respectively), but up from April 2022 (0.9 pp).

• The inactive population (2,415.5 thousand) increased from the previous month and from three months before (0.6 pp and 0.1 pp, respectively) and decreased from one year earlier (2.3 pp).

• The labour underutilisation rate stood at 12.1%, down 0.1 pp from the previous month, down 0.4 pp from three months before and up 0.7 pp from the same month of 2022.
