Summary
In the period from 1995 to 2002 GFCF in Portugal grew at an average rate of 8.3%. Growth rates in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Alentejo, the Algarve and the Autonomous Region of Açores stood significantly above the national average: 15.7%, 15.1%, 13.4% and 12.7% respectively. Investment in the Lisboa and Norte regions grew less than the national average (5.2% and 7.9% respectively), and in the Centro region average GFCF growth in that period stood at 9.3%. As regards household accounts from 1995 to 2002, the Lisboa and Algarve regions posted, on average, primary and disposable income per capita above the national average, in particular the Lisboa region, where indices attained 143 and 133 respectively. The indices for the same indicators in the Autonomous Region of Açores and in the Norte, Centro and Alentejo regions were all below the national average, especially in the case of the Autonomous Region of Açores, where the lowest average indices for income per capita in the period under review were 18% below the national average.
