Overnight stays exceed 2019 levels in all regions except in Algarve - July 2022

Summary

The tourist accommodation sector registered 3.0 million guests and 8.6 million overnight stays in July 2022, corresponding to increases of 85.4% and 90.1%, respectively (+97.6% and +110.7% in June, in the same order). When compared with July 2019, there were increases of 6.3% and 4.8%, respectively. 

In July, the domestic market contributed 2.9 million overnight stays (+9.1%) and the external markets amounted to 5.7 million (+205.2%). When compared with July 2019, the domestic market grew by 15.8% and the external markets reached the same levels as in 2019.

The total revenue increased by 131.9%, to EUR 682.1 million, and the revenue from accommodation amounted to EUR 535.0 million, increasing by 138.8%. Compared with July 2019, there were increases of 27.6% in both. The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) was EUR 86.1 in July and the average daily rate (ADR) amounted to EUR 127.2. When compared to July 2019, the RevPAR increased by 23.0% and the ADR grew by 19.0%.

In the first seven months of 2022, the number of overnight stays increased by 194.3% (+58.5% concerning residents and +406.2% regarding non-residents). When compared to the same period in 2019, the number of overnight stays decreased by 4.4% due to the decrease in overnight stays of non-residents (-9.4%), given that those spent by residents increased by 7.8%. In the period January to July 2022, the total revenue increased by 239.4% and the revenue from accommodation grew by 242.9% (+10.0% and +11.0% compared to the same period in 2019, respectively).

In the first seven months of 2022, considering all means of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps, and youth hostels), there were 15.5 million guests and 40.9 million overnight stays registered, corresponding to increases of 167.5% and 176.9%, respectively.
