Industry Turnover Index declined 7.7% - December 2020

Summary

In nominal and year-on-year terms, Industry Turnover Index fell 7.7% in December (-4.3% in the previous month). Without the Energy grouping, sales change rate shifted from 0.8% in November to -5.2% in December. The indices for the domestic and non-domestic markets decreased 5.6% and 11.0% (-6.6% and -1.1% in the previous month), respectively. In the 4th quarter 2020, turnover year-on-year change rate was -6.7% (-6.3% in the 3rd quarter). For the year of 2020, the average variation was -10.6% (-1.0% in 2019).

Employment, wages and salaries and hours worked change rates were -2.9%, -1.9% and -6.1% (-2.6%, 2.2% and -7.7% in November, by the same order). The average rates for employment, wages and salaries, and hours worked (gross data) in 2020 were -2.4%, -0.5% and -8.5% (0.6%, 3.7% and 0.6% in 2019), respectively.

Despite the circumstances determined by the pandemic COVID-19, Statistics Portugal calls for the best collaboration by companies, families and public entities in responding to Statistics Portugal’s data requests. The quality of official statistics, particularly its ability to identify the impacts of the pandemic COVID-19, crucially depends on this collaboration, which Statistics Portugal thanks in advance.
