Summary
In Portugal there was a change in the habits of home energy consumption over the last 15 years, according to preliminary results of the 2010 Survey on Energy Consumption in Households. In 2010, total energy consumption was  5 762 899 toe, emphasizing the fact that the energy consumption of vehicles used by households’ inhabitants accounted for 51% of the total, being the first time that this consumption was higher than the energy consumption in dwellings. The overall energy consumption per dwelling was 1.47 toe, including consumption in vehicles. Electricity is the main source of energy (44%) and firewood reveals the most notably loss of relative weight, from 42% to 24%, given the latest edition of this survey, conducted in 1996. Energy use in the kitchen still presents the largest share, around 37% compared with other types of use in households. The consumption of renewable energy sources (coal, firewood and solar thermal energy) in the domestic sector represents about 25% of total energy consumption in households in 2010, being the contribution of firewood the most relevant.
