Excluding unprocessed food and energy , the change in the CPI was -0.2% (-0.3% in the previous month and -0.2% in December 2019). Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices In December, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) - the most appropriate inflation indicator for comparisons between the different countries of the European Union, and in particular in the Euro Area - recorded a year-on-year rate of change of -0.3% in Portugal (-0.4% in the previous month). Conversely, the year-on-year rates of change of the following divisions are decreasing: • Recreation and culture : -2.1% (-1.3% in November); • Clothing and footwear : -4.4% (-3.7% in November); • Food and non-alcoholic beverages : 1.5% (2.1% in November).
