In the first two months of 2020, the number of deaths was generally lower than the average figures for the last five years. However, while in previous years mortality continued to decline in the following months, in March 2020 the number of deaths began to rise. 2020 deaths and 2015-2019 average of deaths, per week, in Portugal, weeks 1 to 40 Between March 2, when the first cases of COVID-19 disease were diagnosed in Portugal, and October 4, i.e., between the 10 th week (March 2 to 8) and the 40 th (September 28 to October 4) there were 68,227 deaths, 7,474 more than the average observed in the same period of 2015-2019. Of these, 2,018 were attributed to COVID-19. Of the total number of deaths from March 2 to October 4, 33,664 were male and 34,563 were female (+3,115 and +4,360, respectively, compared to the average for the same period of 2015-2019).
