Esta efeméride, promovida pelas Nações Unidas a cada cinco anos, teve como lema: “Driving change with quality statistics and data for everyone”. O INE juntouse às celebrações desta importante data, através da organização de uma sessão nacional e da participação ativa na comemoração global, organizada pelas Nações Unidas. O Dia Mundial da Estatística é uma iniciativa global que visa destacar o valor das estatísticas oficiais enquanto pilar da democracia, da boa governação e do desenvolvimento sustentável. O Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas, António Guterres, assinalou a ocasião sublinhando que “sociedades informadas dependem de dados de qualidade para enfrentar os desafios globais, da mudança climática às desigualdades sociais”. Celebração nacional A nível nacional, o ano de celebração do Dia Mundial da Estatística coincidiu com o 90.º aniversário do INE, possibilitando um balanço sobre o longo percurso da instituição no serviço à sociedade através de estatísticas fiáveis, relevantes e de qualidade. O momento central das comemorações foi o webinar nacional “Estatísticas de qualidade e dados para todos”, promovido pelo INE e aberto ao público. A sessão de abertura, conduzida pelo Presidente do Conselho Diretivo, António Rua, realçou as nove décadas de serviço e a contínua evolução do INE como uma instituição independente e tecnicamente robusta. O evento contou com a presença de entidades do Sistema Estatístico Nacional, como o Banco de Portugal e os Serviços Regionais dos Açores (SREA) e Madeira (DREM), focando-se na comunicação, inovação e literacia estatística. Foi sublinhado o esforço permanente de adaptação às novas exigências sociais e tecnológicas, tornando a informação estatística mais útil, oportuna e compreensível. Statistics Portugal (INE) was at the forefront of the national and global celebrations of World Statistics Day, marked on 20 October 2025. This event, promoted by the United Nations every five years, was held under the motto: “Driving change with quality statistics and data for everyone.” INE joined the celebrations through the organisation of a national session and active participation in the global commemoration organised by the UN. World Statistics Day is a global initiative that aims to highlight the value of official statistics as a pillar of democracy, good governance, and sustainable development. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, marked the occasion by emphasising that informed societies depend on quality data “to confront increasingly inter-connected global challenges – from climate change to rising inequalities”. National Celebration At the national level, this year’s celebration of World Statistics Day coincided with INE’s 90th anniversary, providing an opportunity to reflect on the institution’s long history of service to society through reliable, relevant, and high-quality statistics. The central moment of the celebrations was the national webinar, “Quality statistics and data for everyone,” promoted by INE and open to the public. The opening session, led by the President of the Board, António Rua, highlighted the nine decades of service and the continuous evolution of INE as an independent and technically robust institution. The event included representatives from the National Statistical System, such as the Bank of Portugal and the Regional Statistical Services of the Azores (SREA) and Madeira (DREM), focusing on communication, innovation, and statistical literacy. The ongoing effort to adapt to new social and technological demands, making statistical information more useful, timely, and comprehensible, was underlined.
