MARCH 2022 49 MONTHLY STATISTICAL BULLETIN The year 2020 was marked by the strong impact of the COVID-19 pandemic: GVA of non-financial enterprises decreased by 9.8% in nominal terms The year 2020 was marked by the strong negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the national economy. The effects resulting from the mandatory confinement imposed by the pandemic situation, led to a strong contraction of the vast majority of sectors of economic activity, determining in some cases almost total paralysis. In 2020: • Non-financial enterprises recorded year-on-year decreases of: » 10.0% in turnover (+4.0% in 2019); » 9.8% in gross value added (GVA) (+5.8% in 2019); • The reduction in GVA was mainly reflected in the gross operating surplus (-17.2%), as personnel costs decreased by only 1.7%, and the number of persons employed decreased by 2.0% (+2.1%, +8.7%, and +4.1% in 2019, in the same order); • Despite the economic context, the number of non-financial enterprises grew by 2.6% to 450,416 units, representing: » More than a third of non-financial enterprises in Portugal; » 77.7% of persons employed; » More than 90% of turnover, GVA, and personnel costs; These enterprises also recorded less negative rates of change between 2019 and 2020 in most of the main economic indicators, compared to single-owned enterprises; The number of non-financial enterprises that started activity was 35,610, corresponding to a birth rate of 7.9% (-2.6 p.p. compared to 2019); • Large non-financial enterprises recorded more negative rates of change when compared to SMEs, with: » -12.4% in GVA (-8.4% in SMEs); » -13.7% in turnover (-7.4% in SMEs); » -3.8% in persons employed (-1.5% in SMEs);
