2022 Edition 44 MONTHLY STATISTICAL BULLETIN In 2019, the environmental goods and services sector generated 2.6% of national GVA and 2.3% of national employment. National expenditure on environmental protection increased by 5.4% In 2019: • The environmental goods and services sector, relative to the country’s total, stood for: » 3.6% of the production; » 2.6% of GVA; » 3.6% of exports; » 2.3% of employment. • The production of environmental protection goods and services amounted to €6,097 million; • The management of environmental resources amounted to €7,801 million; • National expenditure on environmental protection was €3,448.4 million (1.6% of GDP), which represents an increase of 5.4% vis-à-vis the previous year (+6.3% in 2018) and corresponds to the maximum value reached to date; Between 2014 and 2019, concerning the environmental goods and services sector: • Exports increased by 41.9% (8.5 p.p. more than the total of the national economy); • Employment increased by 23.8% (10.6 p.p. above that of the total economy); • GVA grew by 19.8% (3.0 p.p. less than the total in the economy), largely due to the behaviour of the GVA of management of energy resources, which increased by only 0.7% in this period, reflecting the impact of weather conditions on energy production from renewable sources1. In 2018 (the last year with available information for the EU), Portugal was the eighth country with the highest share of the GVA of the environmental goods and services sector in the national GVA and the fifth with the highest share of exports in the national total. 1 Weather conditions are measured through the Hydro Capability Factor - HCF; 2019 was a dry year (HCF of 0.81) which compares with a very wet 2014 (HCF of 1.27).
