FEBRUARY 2022 23 MONTHLY STATISTICAL BULLETIN Negative natural balance worsens in 2021: the number of deaths increased by 1.2% and live births fell by 5.9% Mortality In 2021: • There were 125,147 deaths in Portugal, 1,468 (1.2%) more than in 2020 and 12,856 (11.4%) more than in 2019; • The number of COVID-19 deaths in 2021 was 12,004 (6,972 in 2020), corresponding to 9.6% of total deaths. In January 2022: • The number of deaths was 11,690, i.e., higher than in the previous month (+245 deaths) and 7,981 fewer (-40.6%) than in January 2021; • The number of COVID-19 deaths: » It amounted to 972, representing 8.3%of the total number of deaths; » It increased compared to December 2021 (454 more) and decreased compared to January 2021 (4,813 less).
