Concepts
  • MATERIAL AND SOCIAL DEPRIVATION:  Condition of the population living with a lack due to economic difficulties of at least five out of thirteen items of material and social deprivation. Seven of the thirteen items are collected at the household level: a) capacity to face unexpected financial expenses close to the poverty threshold (without asking for financial help); b) capacity to afford paying for one week annual holiday away from home, paying travel and accommodation costs for all household members; c) capacity to pay on time for rents, mortgage payments or utility bills of the main dwelling, or other expenses not related to the main dwelling; d) capacity to afford a meal with meat or fish (or vegetarian equivalent) every second day; e) capacity to pay for keeping its home adequately warm; f) capacity to afford a car (passenger or mixed); g) capacity to replace worn-out furniture. The remaining six items are collected at the level of individuals aged 16 years or older: h) capacity to replace worn-out clothes by some new ones (excluding second-hand clothing); i) capacity to have two pairs of properly fitting shoes (including a pair of all-weather shoes); j) capacity to spend a small amount of money each week on him/herself; k) capacity to have regular leisure activities; l) capacity of getting together with friends/family for a drink/meal at least once a month; m) capacity to have internet connection at home for personal use.
  • RESIDENT POPULATION:  Set of persons who, regardless of being present or absent in a given housing unit at the moment of observation, have lived in the place of their usual residence for a continuous period of 12 months prior to the moment of observation, or have arrived to the place of their usual residence during the period of 12 months prior to the moment of observation, with the purpose of living there for a year, at least.
  • PRIVATE HOUSEHOLD:  A group of people living at the same dwelling, with either "de jure" or "de facto" family relationships,occupying the all or part of a dwelling; or a single person that fully or partly accupies a dwelling.
  • REFERENCE PERIOD:  The length of time for which data are collected, e.g. a specific day, month or year.
  • AGE GROUP:  The age interval in years to which a person belongs at the time of reference .
