It involves the application of crude death rate by age (younger than 65 years), a standard population (younger than 65 years) whose age structure is fixed and distributed in the same age groups the crude death rates (expressed as deaths per 100 000 inhabitants). The calculus is based on standard European population (IARC, Lyon 1976) defined by the World Health Organization.
