• DEATH:  The permanent disappearance of vital functions.
• UNDERLYING CAUSE OF DEATH:  The disease or injury that initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death or the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the injury.
• REFERENCE PERIOD:  Period to which the information refers and which may be a specific day or a time interval (month, fiscal year, calendar year, among others).
• POTENCIAL YEARS OF LIFE LOST:  It is the number of years that theoretically a given population ceases to live if dying prematurely (before the age of 70 years).

PYLL = Σi (Oi × Ai), where Oi is the number of deaths in age group i and Ai is the number of years of life between the average age of the age group in which death occurred and 70 years.
