MEDICINE: Any substance or composition which properties prevent or treat diseases and their symptoms, either human or animal, in order to establish a medical diagnosis or to restore, correct or modify their functions.

MEDICINE DEPOT: A unit targeted at dispensing medications to the general public, of the responsibility of a pharmacist and depending on a pharmacy in the permit of which it is registered. Its establishment and operating conditions are special and duly regulated.

FORMA FARMACÊUTICA: Final stage presented by active substances or excipients after being submitted to the necessary pharmaceutical operations, in order to facilitate its intake and obtain the highest therapeutic effect.

PHARMACY: Health facility, licensed by a permit granted by the National Pharmacy and Medicines Institute (Portuguese acronym: INFARMED), only awarded to pharmacists on the basis of tendering procedures. The carrying on of its activity is duly regulated, and it is the task of pharmacists or of pharmacy technicians under their supervision, to compound, control, store and dispense medications to the general public. Under duly regulated conditions, it may have two new medicine depots.
