Concepts
  • MEDICINE:  Any substance or composition which properties prevent or treat diseases and their symptoms, either human or animal, in order to establish a medical diagnosis or to restore, correct or modify their functions.
  • MARKET SHARE OF THE GENERIC MEDICINE:  Ratio that reflects the weight of the generic medicine in relation to the total medicines sold in a given period of time.
  • PHARMACY:  Health facility, licensed by a permit granted by the National Pharmacy and Medicines Institute (Portuguese acronym: INFARMED), only awarded to pharmacists on the basis of tendering procedures. The carrying on of its activity is duly regulated, and it is the task of pharmacists or of pharmacy technicians under their supervision, to compound, control, store and dispense medications to the general public. Under duly regulated conditions, it may have two new medicine depots.
  • REFERENCE PERIOD:  Period to which the information refers and which may be a specific day or a time interval (month, fiscal year, calendar year, among others).
  • MEDICINE DEPOT:  A unit targeted at dispensing medications to the general public, of the responsibility of a pharmacist and depending on a pharmacy in the permit of which it is registered. Its establishment and operating conditions are special and duly regulated.
