Summary
Between 2005 and 2009 the resident market presented an increase of 1.6 million in the number of overnight stays and of approximately 1 million in guests of hotel establishments. In the same period, in Alentejo and in Centro regions over 65% of guests and nights were generated by residents in Portugal. In 2009, 57.6% of residents’ nights occurred in hotels, +2.5 p.p. over 2005. The Algarve and Madeira were the national regions which, in the past 5 years, faced greater seasonality of residents’ overnight stays.
