Summary

In 2022, there were 124,755 deaths in Portugal, minus 430 (-0.3%) than in 2021 and 1,035 more (0.8%) than in 2020. The number of deaths from COVID-19 recorded in 2022 was 6,822 (11,988 in 2021 and 6,986 in 2020), corresponding to 5.5% of all deaths.

In December 2022, the number of deaths was 12,244, higher than the numbers registered in November 2022 (2,047 more deaths; +20.1%) and in December 2021 (772 more deaths; +6.7%). In this month, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 increased to 278 (51 more deaths than in November 2022), accounting for 2.3% of all deaths. Compared with December 2021, there was a decrease of 241 deaths due to COVID-19.

In November 2022, 7,164 children were born alive, corresponding to an increase of 9.1% compared to November 2021 (6,565). The total number of live births registered in the first eleven months of 2022 (76,269) was higher than the value observed in the same period of 2021 (72,869), representing a further 3,400 (+4.7%) live births.

In November 2022, the natural balance was -3,017, a slight improvement compared to the same month of 2021, when it reached the value of -3,813. In the first eleven months of 2022, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -35,999, also registering an improvement from the value registered in the same period of 2021 (-40,701).

In November 2022, 1,968 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 20.9% compared to the number of marriages held in November 2021 (340 more marriages). In the first eleven months of 2022, 34,685 marriages were celebrated, 7,338 more (+28.7%) than in the same period of 2021.
