Tourism accommodation activity maintains significant results, particularly in revenue - 2017

Summary

According to the data available from the World Tourism Organization, in 2017 there were a total of 1,323 million international tourist arrivals all over the world (+6.8%; +3.7% in 2016), with an increase of 84 million when compared with the previous year.
When considering the tourism accommodation activity (hotels and similar, tourism in rural areas, lodging tourism and local accommodation), the number of guests totalled 24.1 million (+12.9%; +11.1% in the previous year) and overnight stays stood at 65.8 million (+10.8%; +11.6% in 2016). Revenue had significant raises and a slight acceleration, with the total ones increasing by 18.6% (after +18.1% in 2016) and those from accommodation rising by 20.9% (+19.2% in the previous year).
The hotel activity registered 19.8 million guests (+10.1%) and 55.7 million overnight stays (+8.4%). The number of overnight stays from residents (15.0 million) slightly decelerated in 2017 to a 5.4% growth (+6.3% in 2016). Overnight stays from the inbound markets (40.7 million; 73.1% share) also slowed down to a 9.6% growth (+12.1% in 2016). The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in hotel activity was EUR 51.7 (+15.8%), with total revenue and that from accommodation having increased by 17.7% and 19.6%, respectively.
Concerning tourism demand in 2017, residents in Portugal made 21.2 million tourist trips, reflecting a 5.0% increase (+5.4% in 2016). Leisure, recreation or holiday purposes accounted for 45.2% of the total trips, surpassing the number of trips to visit relatives and friends (44.0%).
