According to the most recent data published by the World Tourism Organization, international tourist arrivals in 2015 accounted for 1 184 million (+ 4.4% compared to 2014). Europe hosted more than half of the international tourists.
In Portugal, the tourist activity showed a significant growth in 2015. The overall means of accommodation (hotels, rural tourism and local accommodation) hosted 19.2 million guests and 53.2 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 10.9% and 9.1%.
The hotel accommodation recorded 16.3 million guests and 46.5 million overnight stays (+ 8.6% and + 7.0% vis-à-vis  2014). The domestic market contributed with 6.5 million guests and 13.4 million overnight stays, which have resulted in a 7.1% and 5.7% growth. The evolution of the foreign markets was still more positive: 9.7 million guests (+ 9.7%) and 33.1 million overnight stays (+ 7.5%).
Total revenue reached EUR 2.4 thousand million (+ 13.5%) and revenue from accommodation EUR 1.7 thousand million (+ 15.3%).
