Summary
Road transport of passengers corresponded to 63.2% of the total of road and railway modes in national traffic in 2013, with a similar weight in relation to the previous year.
The weight of interregional traffic had little expression within the scope of the national road transport in 2013, with stronger representativeness in the total of passengers in the regions of the Centre (10.0%) and Alentejo (12.2%).
In 2013, the stock of vehicles presumably in circulation in Portugal revealed an average age of 11.5 years for light passenger vehicles which stood for 13.9% more than in 2010. In comparison with the European Union (2012), Portugal ranked fifth as the Member State with the highest relative weight (56.7%) of vehicles with 10 or more years, among the 17 countries with data available.
According to the Census, between 2001 and 2011, there was a 2.7% reduction in commuting involving the working population and students. By NUTS III, the highest reductions in commuting came from the regions of Serra da Estrela (-21.0%), Beira Interior Norte (-15.1%) and Pinhal Interior Sul (-14.5%). The Algarve and the Autonomous Regions of Azores and Madeira recorded the highest increases in commuting with 7.1%, 7.4% and 6.5% respectively.
