Trips made by residents in Portugal still growing but mainly with short duration - 3rd Quarter 2013

Summary
In the 3rd quarter 2013, Portuguese residents made 6.35 million tourism trips, 7.4% more than in the 3rd quarter 20121 (+7.0% in the 2nd quarter 2013). Short duration trips (up to 3 nights) raised 11.1%, weighting 53.4% of the total (1.8 p.p. more than in the 3rd quarter 2012).
Although the main motivation to travel was "leisure, recreation or holiday", in close connection with the summer period, the emphasis went to “visit to relatives or friends”, with a 21.7% growth in the number of trips made, surpassing a third the total of trips in the 3rd quarter.
“Free private accommodation” was chosen in 72.8% of all tourist overnight stays and the “private car” was the elected means of transport in 85.5% of all tourism trips.
