Social housing dwellings increased by 2% between 2009 and 2011 - 2011

Summary
The number of social housing dwellings in Portugal increased around 2 000 dwellings (+1.9%) from 2009 to 2011, reaching almost 119 thousand dwellings in 2011, mostly located in Lisbon and in the North regions. In 2011, there were around 1 123 social housing dwellings by 100 000 inhabitants on average, the highest ratio belonging to Madeira (2028).
Portuguese municipalities and other entities with social housing performed conservation works on 3 000 buildings (12%) and proceeded to the rehabilitation of 9 073 dwellings (7.7%). The social housing generated a revenue of EUR 85 million (84% related to collected rents and 16% to house selling) leading to an average revenue per dwelling of EUR 715. The total expense reached EUR 70 million (84% associated to conservation and rehabilitation work and 16% to fixed costs) corresponding to an average expense per dwelling of EUR 590.
