DWELLING: Separate and independent place which, by the way it was built, rebuilt, enlarged, transformed or is being used, is intended for housing with the condition that it is not being used for other purposes at the time of reference: by separate it is meant that it is surrounded by conventional walls or other type, is covered and allows a person or group of persons to sleep, prepare meals or shelter from the weather separately from other members of the community; by independent it is meant that its occupants do not have to cross other accommodations to enter or leave the accommodation where they live.

REFERENCE PERIOD: The length of time for which data are collected, e.g. a specific day, month or year.

DIVISÃO: Espaço num alojamento delimitado por paredes tendo pelo menos 4 m2 de área e 2 metros de altura, na sua maior parte. Podendo embora satisfazer as condições definidas, não são considerados como tal corredores, varandas, marquises, casas de banho, despensas, vestíbulos e a cozinha se tiver menos de 4 m2.

RESIDENT IN THE DWELLING: Person who is present at the accommodation in the reference period and the accommodation is his/her main residence or, if he/she is absent, he/she does not permanently occupy any other accommodation.

HOUSEHOL DWELLING OF USUAL RESIDENCE: Occupied household dwelling that is the usual or main residence of at least one household.

CONVENTIONAL DWELLING: Dwelling consisting on a room or suite of rooms and its accessories in a permanent building or structurally separated part thereof, having a separate access to a street (direct or via a garden or grounds) or to a common space within the building (staircase, passage, gallery and so on).
